New Review of 'LOW DOWN WHERE THE SNAKES CRAWL'
By Dirk Wissbaum
"A new CD by vocalist / percussionist Cee Cee James is out with 11 tracks of cool, laid back tunes that give a fresh perspective to the blues, while delving out a distinct style that is every bit her own. Each tune is smooth and clean, with a certain sultry appeal as Cee Cee's vocal arrangement plays off her slide & rhythm guitarist Rob Andrews. The band is tight and talented, and Cee Cee Cee's vocals are strikingly authentic, at times sounding very reminiscent to the voice of Janis Joplin, who must have been a great inspiration to Cee Cee's vocal style. Her sound is so close to Janis, that she may be one of the only performers out there who could do a tremendous tribute to the late "Queen of Rock and Roll" if she wasn't pursuing a songwriting career of her own." I just want to reach down inside myself and yank some unknown presence out of my soul, I feel it there, and it deserves to come out. This is how I feel when I hear her sing Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl, the title track to her 2008 release. Hot! She makes you want to think back in time - where you can relate to what she’s saying, way back, pulling in some “heavy artillery” so-to-speak. The music, the tone – WOW. She’s taken the word soul and reworked it. She’s mighty flippin’ hot. And after you listen to her, whether it’s in person, or spinning – you will agree. This woman has got some pipes and great talent in keeping you engaged!

"When you witness a performance by Cee Cee James, the first thing that you’re going to realize is that this woman is not going to hold anything back. She is going to give you a presentation that is bold, honest, driving and full of emotion. With a voice so big and raw that you cannot help but be drawn to its mighty force. Everything that Cee Cee has she is going to give. It has to be draining to put so much energy out, but you’re most likely going to be feeling a bit fatigued yourself because this music makes you want to get up and dance and scream for more!"

"When I first heard Cee Cee, I was immediately blown away and taken back by the feeling and emotion in her voice. I only fell further in love with each song that I heard- what a phenomenal talent. This is truly a great album of all original music, and the most heartfelt blues I’ve heard in a long time. 'LOW DOWN WHERE THE SNAKES CRAWL,' is sure to have something that appeals to everyone.”

FIRST REVIEW OF NEW CD - SERIOUSLY RAW!
ROY BROWN - Former 6 Year WBS Board Member
"Cee Cee is backed on this record by the one and only Chris Leighton on drums with Dan Mohler on bass and Rob "SlideBoy" Andrews on slide and rhythm guitar. This combination makes up one of the tightest rhythm sections in blues music. On lead guitar Jason Childs is not a screaming mind numbing player, but one who produces an intricacy of notes and chords, and with an intimacy of feel that turns your head in his direction when he takes a solo. Cee Cee James is a near term future national talent, and she is breaking out right now. SERIOUSLY RAW IS A FIVE STAR RECORD.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF - BLUESWAX
In his recap of the 26th Annual International Blues Challenge
"In my mind, Thornetta Davis and Cee Cee James should have duked it out in a finals diva duel of mythic proportions that would have ended in a sweat-soaked. Both are veteran deeply soulful shouters.
Cee Cee's strep throat growl delivers an earnest gut wrenching sense of pain that mirrors Janis Joplin's moan, but goes beyond Joplin's soul to add layers of nuance with imagery as powerful and painful as the writings of Edgar Allen Poe. Her "Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl" is an undiscovered classic of originals with massive crossover potential.

Sittin' in with Cee Cee James - Don Wilcock
"I think Big Mama - and Janis, for that matter would welcome Cee Cee James into their sorority. Growling, snarling, grinding, impatient and passionate, pertinent and impertinent, Cee Cee parades the stage like a caged cat. Her vibrato is so tense I expect her vocal chords to snap like a taut rubber band on the next line. She has that cracklin, cackling spirit that defined Big Mama and that Janis refined... although refined is not a word
most people would use to define any of the three.

The first thing you notice when you hear Cee Cee James, is, obviously, the resemblance in vocal style to Janis Joplin. the second thing you notice is that she writes some impressive songs. Her latest release, "Low Down Where the Snakes Crawl," is one of the most intense recordings you'll hear this year in any genre.

Cee Cee sometimes has the ghost of Janis Joplin slipping out of her pipes but at other times there's a gospel singer lurking in there or the voice of a hoodoo queen. She's backed by some phenomenal players: Rob "Slideboy" Andrews (slide/rhythm guitar), Dan Mohler (bass), Chris Leighton (drums), and Jason Childs (lead guitar). Cee Cee has four discs out, Spiritually Wet (1999), a demo of covers (2003), He Called Me Angel (2007), and her latest, a swamp-rich bluesy album, Low Down Where the Snakes Crawl. Catch her when you can because her performances are gut-wrenching and cathartic. You'll feel like you've been dropped down the deepest, darkest blues hole and then pulled out, changed, transformed, and rejuvenated. I love everything this woman does! It's pure naked soul.

“Cee Cee James writes songs from a place of emotional honesty that few artists care to reveal. The result is an intimate, sometimes guttural view of a woman who isn’t afraid to face her demons and work out her life’s lessons. This is definitely an excellent record from a female artist who isn’t afraid to bare her soul. I applaud her for that.” -Kyle Deibler - President, Phoenix Blues Society
